Purifying water can be expensive and cumbersome in many countries, and without access to clean water or sanitation, disease runs rampant, and many people die unnecessarily from water-borne illness. Fortunately, due to the collaboration of the University of Botswana and researchers from Uppsala University, a natural and inexpensive way to purify water has been uncovered - Moringa oleifera.

Utilizing extracts from the Moringa oleifera tree, scientists were able to remove impurities from water without using aluminum or iron salts (both substances can have damaging effects on the human body, especially aluminum).

“It’s amazing to see that simple interactions between molecules can solve practical problems. Understanding this process can lead to further developments in water purification using naturally occurring and environmentally friendly materials,” says Adrian Rennie, Professor of Neutron Scattering at Uppsala University.

Normally, water is purified with aluminum of iron salts. This is especially so in underdeveloped countries like Africa and Asia. Instead of using these chemical contaminants, water can be purified easily and inexpensively with Moringa. You can watch a video to see the plant seeds in action, here.

A study shows how extremely small amounts of protein from the seeds of the tree bind strongly to surfaces, a property that results in the aggregation of pollutant particles, which can then be separated from the water. This discovery grew out of a collaboration with the University of Botswana and scientists at The Scattering Center and the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Ångström Laboratory.

Following are instructions on how to purify water with Moringa oleifera seed pods:

  • 1. Collect only mature Moringa seed pods and remove the seed from its casing.
  • 2. Discard the shell casings (seed coat) and put aside.
  • 3. Determine the number of seed kernels you will need based on the turbidity and volume of water to be purified. In general, 1 seed kernel will treat a liter of water. Water with high turbidity (dirt and microorganisms) needs more seeds.
  • 4. Crush the seed kernels (using a grinder hammer, mortar and pestle, etc.)
  • This should result in a fine powder that you can sift through mesh or a screen.
  • 5. Mix the seed powder with clean water to form a paste.
  • 6. Mix the paste and about 1 cup of the clean water in a bottle and shake to make a solution.
  • 7. Filter this into water to be cleaned with fine muslin cloth or mesh screen.
  • (This will also help to remove larger unwanted particles from the water).
  • 8. Stir the water rapidly for about 1 minute then slowly for approximately 10 minutes.
  • 9. Let the water sit undisturbed for 1-2 hours minimum. Longer is fine.
  • 10. Carefully pour clean water from the top – the contaminates will have settled to the bottom.
  • 11. This clean water can then be filtered or sterilized for use in cooking or drinking.

Please note: (Moringa does not remove all water pathogens, just a large percentage)

Moringa seed powder can be used as a quick and simple method for cleaning dirty river water. Studies showed that this simple method of filtering not only diminishes water pollution, but also harmful bacteria. The moringa powder joins with the solids in the water and sinks to the bottom. This treatment also removes 90-99% of bacteria contained in water.

By using Moringa seeds people will no longer be depending on expensive means originating from the West. Using Moringa to purify water replaces chemicals such as aluminium sulphate, which are dangerous to people and the environment, and are expensive.

Water from varying sources will need different amounts of Moringa seeds powder because of the impurities present will not be the same. Experiments with a jar will help in working out the correct amount needed.

In addition to food, shelter and clothing, water is one of our basic human needs and lack of potable water is a major cause of death and disease in our world. The purpose of this document is to provide information on household water treatment using seeds of the Moringa oleifera tree.

Using natural materials to clarify water is a technique that has been practiced for centuries and of all the materials that have been used, seeds of the Moringa have been found to be one of the most effective. Studies have been conducted since the early 1970's to test the effectiveness of Moringa seeds for treating water. These studies have confirmed that the seeds are highly effective in removing suspended particles from water with medium to high levels of turbidity (Moringa seeds are less effective at treating water with low levels of turbidity).

Moringa oleifera seeds treat water on two levels, acting both as a coagulant and an antimicrobial agent. It is generally accepted that Moringa works as a coagulant due to positively charged, water-soluble proteins, which bind with negatively charged particles (silt, clay, bacteria, toxins, etc) allowing the resulting “flocs” to settle to the bottom or be removed by filtration. The antimicrobial aspects of Moringa continue to be researched. Findings support recombinant proteins both removing microorganisms by coagulation as well as acting directly as growth inhibitors of the microorganisms. While there is ongoing research being conducted on the nature and characteristics of these components, it is accepted that treatments with Moringa solutions will remove 90-99.9% of the impurities in water.

Solutions of Moringa seeds for water treatment may be prepared from seed kernels or from the solid residue left over after oil extraction (presscake). Moringa seeds, seed kernels or dried presscake can be stored for long periods but Moringa solutions for treating water should be prepared fresh each time. In general, 1 seed kernel will treat 1 liter (1.056 qt) of water.

Preparing the Seeds and Treating Your Water .

1- Dry the seeds 3 days in direct sunlight. If using fruit pods, remove seeds from fruit before drying.
2- Discard any soft or discolored seeds.
3- Remove the dark outer skin or hull, then grind the seeds to a powder. It takes 15-20 ground Moringa seeds (or four heaping teaspoons of powder, or the contents of four rounded soda bottle tops of powder) to clear 20 liters of water. The powder can be stored for up to one month for later use if stored in a container with a tight-fitting lid or cover, in a cool dark place.
4- In a clean bottle, mix the powder vigorously with a little clean water to make a runny paste, then add it to the water you want to clear in the treatment container.
5- Stir quickly for about thirty seconds.
6- Then stir the water slowly and regularly for five to ten minutes.
7- Cover the treatment container and let it settle for 2 to 3 hours.
If moved or shaken before then, clarification will take much longer or fail to reach completion.
8- After the water has settled for at least 2 hour, the water is ready for secondary treatment, such as disinfection.
